Lymphoedema – What Is It?

Lymphoedema is a condition that results in the swelling of a limb due to an impaired flow of lymph fluid. It typically affects arms and legs but can also affect other parts of the body. Lymphoedema can be caused by a variety of factors including trauma, infections, cancer treatments, or even genetics. It also arises as a result of surgery, where some or all of the lymphatic system has been removed or damaged. This may have been necessary to treat a cancer or another life-threatening medical condition.

At A Myo-Therapy Approach to Remedial & Bowen Therapies, I offer manual treatment to alleviate the symptoms of ongoing lymphoedema and related conditions. Whilst this condition is chronic, there is no cure currently.

How A Healthy Lymphatic System Works

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that transports fluid throughout our body. This fluid is composed of proteins, fats, and other elements. It's used to transport waste away from the cells, allowing the body to work in an efficient manner. The lymphatic system is also responsible for carrying white blood cells and other immune system components throughout our bodies.

When there is damage or impairment to this system for any of the reasons discussed above, it can lead to a build-up of fluid in the affected area. This is known as lymphoedema and can cause pain, difficulty with movement and a range of other issues.

LIPOEDEMA is another lymphatic condition requiring MLD/CDT treatment. This is a congenital condition generally in females, where the body deposits adipose cells in the subcutaneous tissues causing swelling, pain and discomfort usually in the lower limbs.

PRIMARY LYMPHOEDEMA is another congenital condition where there are fewer than usual lymphatic nodes and vessels, causing chronic swelling (oedema) throughout the body.

MLD gentle massage aimed at draining the fluid and mobilising the muscles to improve lymphatic drainage. MLD reduces the pain and discomfort associated with lymphoedema and other lymphatic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is lymphoedema more common in women?

Yes, lymphoedema is more common in women than men. This is largely due to the additional risk factors associated with childbirth and breast cancer treatments. During childbirth, the body is subjected to significant pressure and trauma, which can lead to damage in the lymphatic system. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can also affect the functioning of this system by killing off healthy cells.

  • How does lymphatic drainage work?

Lymphatic drainage is a type of therapeutic massage used to stimulate lymph flow and reduce swelling. It involves gentle, rhythmic strokes applied to the affected area in order to reduce fluid build-up and improve circulation. This technique can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as compression garments or exercise programs to provide relief from lymphoedema symptoms.
